The Periodic Table EXPLAINED - 5 Tips to Ace IGCSE/ GCSE Chemistry

May 07, 2025 | Shannon Tanwani | IGCSE/ GCSE Chemistry

Whether you’re revising for an upcoming Chemistry exam or just trying to finally get it, this post is your shortcut to success on The Periodic Table. We’ve broken down the essential points - just like in our revision video - so you can tackle questions with confidence and clarity.

Psst…Don’t forget to watch the full video at the end!

1. Understand Groups and Periods
Before diving into the elements, understand the table’s structure.
-Groups (columns) tell you how many electrons are in the outer shell.
-Periods (rows) show how many electron shells an atom has. Memorising this layout gives you a cheat code for predicting element behaviour!

2. Chemical Properties Made Simple!
Why are Group 1 metals so reactive? Why are Noble Gases so…chill? This all comes down to valence electrons and electron configurations - once you crack this, you can explain trends like reactivity, conductivity, and more with ease!

3. Metals vs Non-metals
You’ll spot a clear dividing line between metals and non-metals on the table.
-Metals: Usually shiny, good conductors, and malleable.
-Non-metals: Dull, brittle, and insulators.

Pro tip: Knowing this distinction helps with bonding questions and reaction patterns.

4. Trends You Need to Know
Acing your exam means spotting patterns, not memorising every element.

Pro tip #2: Focus on key trends!
-Atomic size increases down a group, decreases across a period.
-Reactivity increases as you go down Group 1, but decreases in Group 7.
-Use these to make smart, educated guesses even if you’re unsure!

5. Apply Your Mind, Don’t Just Memorise!
Another pro tip, don’t just learn facts - learn to use them!
Practise applying your knowledge through our test & learn feature to predict reactions, complete tables or explain observations.
The periodic table isn’t just a reference material - it’s a toolbox!
